Prompt Mastery Part IV: Meta Prompting

Andrew Jarman

Updated: Feb 24

As AI technology evolves, many businesses are using a technique called meta-prompting—essentially using one prompt to help the AI create or refine another prompt. Very 'meta'!

This method is especially helpful for tasks where the original instructions may need to be clearer or more precise to handle complex needs. Sometimes it can just be helpful to let the AI do the thinking and the typing!

In this guide, we’ll look at how meta-prompting can improve AI responses by adding detailed instructions or examples. This boosts the quality of answers and helps keep responses consistent and adaptable across different areas of a business.

How to get started with meta-prompting

What is Meta-Prompting?

Meta-prompting is a method where an overarching “parent” prompt instructs the AI to create, modify, or improve another prompt, making the AI more responsive and context-aware. This technique helps businesses achieve:

  1. Increased Specificity: AI responses that are aligned closely with task requirements, tone, and context.

  2. Adaptive Outputs: Meta-prompting allows prompts to flexibly adjust for different scenarios, minimising the need for manual intervention.

  3. Scalability: Through refined, self-generated prompts, AI systems can manage a wider variety of tasks without unique instructions for each case.

Let’s look at two effective meta-prompting methods: providing specific instructions and including few-shot examples.

Providing Specific Instructions for Precision

Businesses often need AI responses to be precise and tailored to meet specific requirements. Instead of manually creating prompts for each unique case, meta-prompting enables AI to produce responses that align with business objectives. By providing clear instructions within the meta-prompt, you guide the AI to refine its output based on your needs.

Example in Customer Support

Imagine a customer support system where responses must be empathetic and offer actionable solutions. Instead of crafting separate prompts for each type of query, you can use a meta-prompt to direct the AI to generate specific, empathetic responses across different scenarios:

Meta-Prompt:

Create a prompt that instructs the AI to respond to customer complaints in an empathetic tone and to offer actionable steps to resolve the issue.

The AI could then generate a response-generation prompt like:

Respond to the customer's complaint with empathy, acknowledging their frustration and showing understanding. Offer clear, actionable steps to resolve their issue. Use a polite, warm, and helpful tone to reassure the customer and demonstrate a commitment to finding a solution. Avoid defensive language and, if applicable, express appreciation for their feedback to improve the service. End the response with an invitation for further questions or clarifications if needed.

This approach ensures that the AI consistently delivers relevant, customer-focused responses, reducing the need for manual intervention.

Example in Marketing Copy

Marketing teams benefit from generating content that’s tailored to target audiences, whether for an email campaign, social media, or web content. Meta-prompting can help by directing the AI to create prompts that capture the tone and style needed for different audience segments.

Meta-Prompt:

Generate a prompt instructing the AI to create marketing copy that’s playful and engaging, specifically aimed at a millennial audience.

This could yield a copy-generation prompt like:

Write marketing copy that’s playful, engaging, and relatable for a millennial audience. Use a lighthearted, conversational tone with modern expressions, pop culture references, or humor to catch their attention. Make the copy feel inclusive and authentic, emphasizing shared experiences or values millennials care about. Focus on creating a sense of excitement and fun, while clearly conveying the product’s benefits or features. Keep it short, punchy, and memorable.

By embedding specific instructions, marketing teams can achieve a consistent tone and messaging style without crafting each prompt from scratch.

Including Few-Shot Examples for Contextual Understanding

Few-shot prompting involves giving the AI a few examples of the desired output format to guide its responses. Meta-prompting can direct AI to create prompts that include these examples, helping it understand context and produce responses that align with expectations.

Example in Recruitment

In recruitment, the AI could assist with candidate screening by generating prompts that ask relevant questions based on the specific skills needed for each role. By including few-shot examples in the meta-prompt, recruiters can ensure the AI generates well-targeted interview questions.

Meta-Prompt:

Create a prompt that guides the AI in developing interview questions for evaluating the technical skills of a project manager in the reinsurance industry, specifically based in London. Include few-shot examples of questions that focus on the candidate's knowledge of reinsurance processes, risk management tools, and project management methodologies relevant to the field.

The resulting prompt might look like:

Generate interview questions to assess the technical expertise of a project manager in the reinsurance industry. Focus on questions that evaluate the candidate's familiarity with industry-specific processes, risk assessment tools, and project management skills. Use the examples provided below to guide the AI in crafting relevant questions."

Few-Shot Examples:

"Can you describe your experience with project management methodologies (like Agile or Waterfall) and how you've adapted them for reinsurance projects?"
"How do you approach risk assessment in reinsurance, and what tools or frameworks do you find most effective?"
"Give an example of a complex project you managed within the reinsurance industry. What were some key challenges, and how did you overcome them?"
"What experience do you have with regulatory compliance in the reinsurance industry, and how do you ensure your projects align with these requirements?"
"How do you collaborate with underwriting teams to ensure project objectives align with risk management strategies?"

With these examples, the AI understands the style and depth of questions required, allowing it to create more tailored and insightful prompts for each candidate.

Example in Knowledge Management

If an AI is helping employees navigate a company knowledge base, a meta-prompt could direct it to generate prompts that guide users to the right information with relevant examples, enhancing usability.

Meta-Prompt:

Create a prompt instructing the an LLM to help users find information in the company knowledge base. Include example queries like ‘How do I set up remote access?’ or ‘Where can I find the holiday calendar?’. Generate some few-shot Q & A examples to guide the model.

The resulting prompt could look like:

Help users locate specific information in the company knowledge base by answering their questions clearly and accurately. Provide relevant steps or direct them to the correct resources within the knowledge base. Use the following examples as a guide for format and tone."

Few-Shot Q&A Examples:

Q: "How do I set up remote access?"
A: "To set up remote access, go to the IT support section of the knowledge base and look for the 'Remote Access Setup Guide.' Follow the steps listed there, and if you encounter any issues, you can contact IT support at support@company.com."

Q: "Where can I find the holiday calendar?"
A: "The holiday calendar is available in the 'HR Resources' section of the knowledge base under 'Company Policies.' You can view or download the calendar from there."

Q: "What is the process for submitting an expense claim?"
A: "To submit an expense claim, navigate to the 'Finance' section in the knowledge base and open the 'Expense Claim Procedure' document. This document outlines the steps, required forms, and submission deadlines."

Q: "Who do I contact if I need help with software installation?"
A: "For assistance with software installation, reach out to the IT department. You can find contact information and request forms in the 'IT Support' section of the knowledge base."

Q: "How do I access the onboarding materials for new employees?"
A: "Onboarding materials are available in the 'HR Resources' section under 'New Employee Orientation.' This includes guides, training schedules, and contact information for further assistance."

Why Meta-Prompting for Prompt Refinement Matters

Meta-prompting provides businesses with a flexible, scalable approach to optimising AI prompts.

By embedding specific instructions or few-shot examples, you enable the AI to generate responses that are precise, consistent, and relevant, enhancing its effectiveness across multiple functions. Whether for customer support, recruitment, or internal systems, meta-prompting can transform how organisations leverage AI to meet their unique needs.
